Mef2c function in skeletal muscle is required for normal glucose homeostasis. Ten-week-old control (ctl) or Mef2c SkMKO (cko) male mice were tested for glucose tolerance. (A) Following a 16-h fast and prior to glucose injection, Mef2c SkMKO (cko) had significantly lower blood glucose than control (ctl) mice, n = 12. (B) After a 16-h fast, mice received a bolus injection of glucose (1 g glucose/kg body weight) at time = 0. After an initial rise in blood glucose that resulted in statistically identical blood glucose at t = 15 min, Mef2c SkMKO mice cleared glucose from the blood more quickly than control mice, n = 12. Blood glucose readings were taken at 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 min post-injection. *p < 0.05; **p < 0.01; ***p < 0.001. Values are mean + standard deviation.
