Original and new myofibre basement membrane. Transmission electron microscopy of biopsies obtained from regenerating human skeletal muscle 30 days post injury. Two basement membrane-like structures were observed around many regenerating muscle fibres. The outer basement membrane (arrows) consisted of empty pleats, which were clearly anchored to the muscle fibre and potentially are remnants of the original basement membrane. A continuous basement membrane, tightly associated with the sarcolemma as is seen in uninjured muscle, was also observed. Examples from 2 subjects are presented.
