Increased incidence of unstructured and contracture cores in 14- to 27-month-old CASQ1-null mice. While the percentage of fibers in WT mice exhibiting structural cores remained low across all ages (maximum of 8% at 27 months of age), muscle fibers from CASQ1-null mice exhibited a significantly increased frequency (*P < 0.05) of structural cores from 4 months of age (approximately 2%) to 14 months (23%), remaining approximately unchanged thereafter (see also Additional file 3: Table S1 for additional detail). CASQ1, skeletal isoform of calsequestrin; WT, wild type.
